United States of America: August 21 – 22, 2014

  • Grand Canyon National Park
  • Coming up with Native American names for each other – I was ‘Liz Hunter Gatherer’
  • Planning to have a pizza party and watch the sunset – instead, pizza party in the trailer/under the gazebo, trying to hide from the pouring rain and cold wind
  • In bed by 8:30PM for an early morning hike
  • 5AM start to hike into the Grand Canyon
    • Taking the bus from the camp ground to South Kaibab trailhead
    • Going through Ooh Ahh Point to Cedar Ridge
    • Going solo because I’m too impatient to wait for people
    • Thinking ‘oh this is easy’ hiking down into the Canyon, and not realizing how much of a struggle it will be to climb back out
    • Trail start – 6:50AM / Rest at Cedar Ridge – 30 mins / Trail end – 9:20AM
    • The reason you start early is because the lower you go, the denser the air, the hotter the temperature – so if you’re going to be doing a 6 or 7 hour hike, you’ll want to start early because you carry all your water and food with you and don’t want to be carrying all that on your back in the heat
  • Finally being able to watch the sunset at the Grand Canyon, and having two Trek leaders do the ice bucket challenge
  • SMORES ARE DELICIOUS
  • My HD crashed, so I lost a lot of my colour photos – which sucks because the colours of the Grand Canyon are so amazing. It was like standing in front of a photoshopped postcard and waiting for the green screen to appear. :(
