Costa Rica: October 15 – 16, 2014

  • Puerto Viejo (Limon) & Playa Cocles (Limon) & Playa Grande (Limon)
  • Currency: Costa Rican colón (USD is widely accepted, but you will get change back in local currency)
  • Puerto Viejo is a coastal town on the Caribbean with an island vibe
  • There are a fair amount of travellers from all-over the world, and since it’s on the Caribbean you’ll be able to get around with English fairly easily
  • Best way to get around is to rent an island bicycle for 4000 colones/day (about $7.50USD) and a $100 deposit – we got ours from Cafe Rico, but there are plenty of bicycle rental shops around so you can try and bargain hunt
  • You can ride your bikes up and down the coast and visit the following places (they’re all on the same road it’s a 27km journey return – it’s leg day):
    • Jaguar Rescue Center – 4.5km from Puerto Viejo: they rehabilitate injured wildlife and prepare them for release back into the wild. They have tours in the mornings and you get to get up close and personal with wildlife like toucans, monkeys, sloths, frogs, snakes, deer, and more (I’ll be uploading a more details blog about this next week!)
    • Playa Cocles – 3.7km from Puerto Viejo: Beautiful long beach with lots of surfers
    • Playa Manzanillo (in the National Park) – 13.5km from Puerto Viejo: A beautiful beach in the National Park. You can also spend a day hiking out here.
  • Eat: Fish with Caribbean sauce – coconut rice, fish, special Caribbean sauce, with rice and beans
  • Language:
    salida: exit
    entrada: entrance
    sandia: watermelon
    botella: bottle
    de: of
    criolla: creole
soda: restaurant (only in Costa Rica)
